Sorry, But I Cannot Apologize

So, President Barack Obama apologized for our accidentally burning some Korans.  What a nice thing to do.

Rick Santorum, of course, set us straight.  What fools we were.  Kind of like how Obama is trying to destroy Christianity with recommending kids go to college, it turns out that Obama is trying to destroy America via apology. He is not alone, of course, Republicans complain about this a lot.  But here was Santorum’s point:

“There was nothing deliberately done wrong here. This was something that happened as a mistake. Killing Americans in uniform is not a mistake, ” said Santorum. “Say it’s unfortunate…but to apologize for something that was not an intentional act is something that the president of the United States in my opinion should not have done.”

“I think it shows weakness,” said Santorum on the apology.

Pay close attention there.  According to Rick Santorum?  You do not apologize for making mistakes.  You might say that I am being unfair here, that I am taking him out of context.  But the context is right here:

Say it’s unfortunate…but to apologize for something that was not an intentional act is something that the president of the United States in my opinion should not have done.

If it was inadvertent, there is no reason to apologize.

What Rick seems to not get is that an apology for mistakes is what mature, thoughtful, good and decent people do.  If you make a mistake, it is good and right to apologize for making a mistake.  The point of an apology is that you are penitent for a wrong committed – whether you intended to commit an offense or not.  It is not just for times when you intended to offend.  Of course, when guys like Santorum intend to offend, they then refuse to apologize, because “Truth is offensive!”  So, basically, living In Santorum’s world means never having to say you are sorry .  For anything.

Well, okay, you do for being concerned about women’s rights and reproductive health.
