Dr. Laura Wants Her First Ammendment Rights Back…

As if she had lost them.  Maybe they are between the couch cushions?

Dr. Laura seems to be under the mistaken notion that the rest of us have a freedom she does not have as a radio personality.

“I made the decision not to do radio anymore,” Schlessinger said on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “I want to regain my first amendment rights. I want to be able to say what is on my mind, in my heart, what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry.”

First…what world is she living in where there is a place people can say what they want and nobody gets angry?  I do not have a radio show and I have still had it happen to me, or I got annoyed with something someone in my real life said.

Secondly, our first ammendment rights do not mean we do not face possible repurcussions.  I am pretty confident that if I used the “n” word eleven times in a tirade at work?  I’d get fired.

I would, of course, still have my first amendment rights… our first amendment right is not a protection against offending people.  Our freedom of speech might have frustrating ramifications.  We might even have to apologize from time to time.

It is important to note that she is not being fired.  She is not renewing her contract.  She is walking of her own choice.  She could continue on with her radio show, essentially unshackled, as she has always been.

There are valid reasons to quit the radio biz.  But arguing about a lack of free speech?  I am calling her on that joke of a defense.

The best part?  She is appearing with Glenn Beck next weekend to “take back” Civil Rights.

Seriously.  Apparently Palin does not understand the First Amendment either.  Nobody silenced Dr. Laura.  Nobody tried to.  And Apparently Palin doesn’t really understand what was the issue.  She champions Dr. Laura as some person who is a threat to “Constitutional Obstructionists”:*

Dr.Laura=even more powerful & effective w/out the shackles, so watch out Constitutional obstructionists. And b thankful 4 her voice,America!

She didn’t get attacked for making a bold stand for some oppressed person, Mrs. Palin… she was whining about why white people cannot use a certain rather offensive word.  She was berating a caller as well.  I don’t think anybody needs to look out (let alone mythical Constitutional Obstructionists), she clearly isn’t offering America any Words of Wisdom…which explains why Sarah Palin is in her camp on this I suppose.  Even though Dr. Laura slammed her during the election.

And there are still people trying to argue Palin is some sort of voice worth listening to.

*Please note, the only attempts I can recall to change the Constitution in the last ten years have all come from Republicans.
