Ebert 1, Conservative Critics F

Roger Ebert sometimes courts some controversy.  Like the other day when he tweeted:

@ebertchicago Kids who wear American Flag T-shirts on 5 May should have to share a lunchroom table with those who wear a hammer and sickle on 4 July.

Listen…the kids he is referring to were intentionally aiming to offend.  They are getting the exact kind of attention they were trying to get.  There is nothing all that terrible about what Ebert said.  But do not tell the Conservatives who found his tweet possibly one of the most evil things ever said in all of history.

For instance, the wounded patriot Caleb Howe asked:

You know, @ebertchicago, I’m not as expert on flag etiquette as you. Tell me, which do I fly when you die of cancer?

Conservatives are trying to make this about the oppression of Patriotism…not what it actually was… a calculated and coordinated attempt to mock other people.  Should the kids have been sent home?  No.  And it is frankly absurd to not expect those who would be offended to be anything other than civil about it (the school had cited fears of violence).  But these kids deserve the criticism.

And in what world is Eberts comment on par with Howe’s?!

UPDATE:  Not to the Ebert story… but a few weeks back I questioned how soon E!’s Pretty Wild would last.  Looks like not long.  Sunday was a repeat.  I did not think much about that at the time.  Now I suspect we know why.  Boy, episode after episode of tearful declarations of innocence and then she pleads guilty?

“After lengthy considerations and fighting the best pretrial fight we could, we decided it was in Alexis’ best interests to take responsibility for her small part in this incident,” her attorney Jeffery K. Rubenstein said.

I give the guy credit.  What little the show presented of him, he was trying his hardest to provide a solid defense.  I bet we don’t see an episode where she confesses she did go to Blooms to her lawyer.
